Hi everyone,

The Sunrise Ruby

Born deep within the heart of Myanmar, renowned for its "pigeon blood" rubies, the Sunrise Ruby began its journey in the 1990s. This precious stone, destined for greatness, awaited its moment to shine.

To capture the essence of this phenomenal ruby, Cartier, its new owner, sought a name that reflected its fiery beauty. Inspiration struck from an unexpected source – a poem by the renowned Sufi poet Rumi. His verses, evoking the dawn's fiery hues, perfectly mirrored the gem's captivating color. Thus, the Sunrise Ruby was christened.

Mounted in a platinum ring, adorned with two dazzling diamonds, the Sunrise Ruby's true potential blossomed. Its exceptional 25.59 carats radiates with a "pure pigeon blood" hue, the most coveted shade for rubies. Its clarity is exceptional, its cut precise and mesmerizing, earning it the title of a "unique treasure of nature" by the Gemological Institute of Switzerland.

In 2017, At a Sotheby's auction in Geneva, it sold for $30.3 million. Today, the Sunrise Ruby resides in the prestigious private collection of the House of Cartier.

The DeLong Star Ruby

This 100.32 -carat wonder, has found in the heart of Burmese ruby mines in the 1930s. Its pigeon blood hue and captivating six-rayed star caught the eye of Edith Haggin DeLong, a wealthy patron of the arts.

DeLong, captivated by the ruby's beauty, saw it as more than just a personal treasure. Recognizing its cultural and scientific significance, she generously donated it to the American Museum of Natural History in 1937. But fate took a dramatic turn in October 1964. Jack Roland Murphy, a notorious thief, orchestrated a daring heist, snatching the DeLong Star Ruby and other precious gems from the museum. In a twist worthy of a Hollywood thriller, The stone was mysteriously left at a deserted phone booth, retrieved, and finally back in its rightful place.

The DeLong Star Ruby's story transcends its dazzling exterior. Gemologists have studied its composition, revealing the secrets behind its vibrant color and captivating star. It serves as a reminder that gemstones are not just objects of beauty; they are windows into Earth's history, testaments to human fascination, and symbols of wonder that continue to captivate us.

The Carmen Lucia Ruby

The Carmen Lucia Ruby, a 23.10-carat oval stone glowing with a rich, saturated red color. The Carmen Lucia Ruby is named after Carmen Lucia Costa, the wife of the Brazilian businessman who donated the stone to the Smithsonian Institution.

Found in the fabled Mogok region of Burma (now Myanmar) in the 1930s, the Carmen Lucia Ruby is one of the largest faceted Burmese rubies known. Its 23.10 carats of fiery brilliance make it a true gem of the world. The stone boasts a richly saturated red color, often referred to as "pigeon's blood." This coveted shade is the pinnacle of ruby perfection, prized for its depth and vibrancy.

Cut in a classic oval shape, the Carmen Lucia Ruby maximizes its brilliance. Its facets catch and reflect light, creating a mesmerizing dance of color within the stone.  After years in private collections, the ruby joined the prestigious National Gem Collection of the Smithsonian Institution in 2009. It is now a treasured part of American history, accessible to the public for admiration and study.

The Carmen Lucia Ruby is set in a platinum ring, flanked by two triangular-cut diamonds. This elegant setting enhances the ruby's beauty and historical significance.

The Rosser Reeves Ruby

The Rosser Reeves Ruby is one of the largest and finest star rubies in the world, weighing a whopping almost 139 carats. This puts it among the top 1% of all known star rubies in terms of size. For comparison, a typical diamond engagement ring weighs around 1 carat!

The six-rayed star that shimmers within the Rosser Reeves Ruby is a result of the gemstone's unique crystal structure and the way it interacts with light. This phenomenon, known as asterism, is relatively rare in rubies, making this particular stone even more valuable.

The Rosser Reeves Ruby is believed to have originated in Sri Lanka, a region known for its high-quality rubies. From there, it made its way to Europe, where it was eventually acquired by advertising mogul Rosser Reeves in the 1950s. Reeves carried the ruby with him as a lucky charm, affectionately calling it his "baby."

In 1965, Rosser Reeves generously donated the ruby to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. It is now a treasured part of the museum's collection, on display for the public to admire. This six-rayed star is often associated with guidance and hope.

The "Estrela de Fura" is one of the most important rubies discovered in the history of mankind, of our generation, and probably of many generations after. In July 2022, Fura Gems company discovered a 101-carat ruby at its mine in Mozambique — the largest gem-quality ruby ever unearthed. The mining company named it the Estrela de Fura, meaning “the star of Fura,” and had it cut and polished into an exceptional 55.22-carat gem that went under the hammer at Sotheby’s on June 8. in New York, it was the world’s largest ruby to appear at auction.
