One of the projects I’m most proud of started with a set of tourmalines weighing over 20 carats, with a acceptable cut. However, it’s hard to settle for acceptable quality when you know the stones have the potential for much more. Despite the risks involved (re-cutting is always unpredictable: internal stress in the stone can lead to cracks, significant weight loss, etc.), I decided to transform them into a matching pair and a stone for a ring. We ended up losing more than four carats, but now we have a pair weighing 7.57 carats and a single stone of 9.75 carats, both with perfect brilliance and proportions.
